The price of raw pangasius in the Mekong Delta is high, many farmers still refuse to sell it.
The selling price of raw pangasius is fluctuating at VND 29,500-30,000/kg with sizes from 700-800g/fish, the selling price has increased by VND 10,000/kg over the same period.
Explaining the reason why the price of raw pangasius is pushed up: From the beginning of the year to the middle of July 2021, the farming facilities that supply raw pangasius for export and processing markets are always sufficient or surplus. However, from mid-July to the end of September 2021, due to social distancing, processing and purchasing were limited, pangasius consumption was interrupted. By the beginning of October 2021, seafood processing factories were operating relatively stable again, helping to completely solve the backlog of pangasius production.
Due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic during the past time, many farming establishments have paused, changed their farming subjects, stopped raising, while the rest of them raised in moderation, so the amount of raw fish was of a small size. 0.8 – 1 kg/fish is not much available to the export market, raw materials are scarce, most fish are 0.5 – 0.7 kg/fish. It takes 7-8 months for pangasius to reach commercial size. It is expected that the price of pangasius will continue to increase until the end of the second quarter of 2022.
Currently, the price of raw pangasius has increased, so some fish farmers have reached the harvest size but have not yet sold it because they think the price will continue to increase in the near future.
And one of the reasons for the increase in fish prices is due to market demand, especially in the US market, fish of less than 1 kg/fish, which businesses purchase and export at very high prices. According to a separate source of KTSG Online, the company currently sells pangasius to the US market for about 6 USD/KG. This is a historic high price that this industry has never reached in the past.
